There's that show on TV -- Hoarders. I rarely make it through a full episode. Why? Well, it is either one of a couple things or a compilation of them all. One is that there is never a full resolution to the MAJOR problem that exists. It's like they never get to finish the job which drives me crazy as it is. Two would be that it is an emotional feeling or sadness that drives them to the love of things due to a life tragedy. Third, I cannot function in chaos, and everything in that show goes against anything that I am and grosses me out! Whenever I even see a commercial it makes me want to go into an extreme cleaning mode to ensure my house will never resemble anyhing remotely close to the chaos.
When we went on vacation this year, we toured the Naval Air Museum. They had little areas set up representing a town during the World Wars. The house was adorable, yet so simple. The thing that stood out was the simplicity. It had everything to make it cozy and inviting, but far less than anything seen in homes today. You know, I kind of liked the idea. No, we aren't giving up modern conveniences, but maybe just simplifying a little bit.
With that in mind, along with the anti-hoarding theme I did much Craigslisting over the past few months. Less is more...less to clean...more time to do quality things. The less "stuff" there is, the easier life is...the less energy spent with stuff! I still like "stuff", but I'm trying to be more resourceful. Right before Christmas, we had a couple of flood lights go out on our Christmas display. Rather than running out to the store to plunk down the insanely high prices, I called my mom who I knew probably had some lying around. Sure enough, she did. There wasn't anything they use them for anymore. They weren't doing her any good, but they did me a lotta good! Same thing applies to me. If I have something that will help her or someone else...they are welcome to it.
While things are nice, my things don't love me back. It is my family and people that love me not stuff. Since I'm not a resolution girl, I'm setting some goals that I hope to strive for...quality rather than quantity and people rather than things!

So true! Our culture looks to "stuff" to fulfill them. It's sad really! Simple is better! We are not what we own.
