Aliyah begged to go out somewhere for supper tonight. I obliged since I didn't really have an idea of what to have for supper anyway. Since she couldn't decide on anything, I chose Sub-Way. It's only a couple of blocks from my house. As I was sitting there enjoying my sub club minus ham, I decide that Sub-Way must love customers like us. We are the ones who get a sandwich basically naked. We even get less meat because we don't get ham on the sandwich. So, unlike other people's huge sandwich with all of the extras, ours is skinny. It was tasty and filling as usual.
I went to re-fill my drink and I guess the "health dept" mode in me kicked in. I worked in a concession stand for my summer job during HS & college. Also, in college, I worked in Food Service (yucky job). Anyway, I have had training in "health dept" stuff and for some reason, I kind of paid attention to the chute where the ice is dispensed. Much to my dismay, it had a TON of mold and crud in it--and your ice rolls right on it as it comes out!!!! It is a clear one and you could easily see this. I dumped my ice and my immediate thought was I wonder what the soda tips look like?? See, those are supposed to be cleaned daily. Obviously, this hasn't been cleaned ever or in a very long time. I tried to politely tell one of the workers, however she just kind of looked at it and didn't do a thing about it. YUCK! Funny thing, this particular Sub-Way has been all remodelled and looks nice--except for the moldy drink station. I don't know how the health dept. people have missed this glaring atrocity, but they surely have. I am now reconsidering even having drinks at places that have these ice dispensers!! I prefer the kind where the ice is scooped out. Oh, I forgot to mention that in the Sub-Way Scrabble game, I won a free drink--oh boy, can't wait to use that one--NOT NOT NOT!

I just have one thing to say - GROSS! I will be double checking those dudes from now on!!
Ugh. I always thought the ice scoop was worse because you know they're dragging their knuckles across that ice all the time! ewww. Maybe we should all just bring drinks from home.... or ever safer, eat at home!! haha
Unfortunately, even the seemingly cleanest restaurants have the grossest machines and kitchens. If the ice dispenser isn't clean, you better believe the big old ice machine in the kitchen area is gross and slimy...yuk... The health dept. visit may be the only time some machines are ever cleaned! I like to get a bottled drink, like a sobe water or a carton of milk.
